Did you know that…

  •  You have around 16-18 glasses of blood in the body. Every 3 months, your body discards those old cells (red blood cells).

When you loose blood through donation your body is given the signal to produce new cells. Your body will now then be repopulated with new and young cells. This is like the "change oil" in a car.

Also, when you give blood or loose blood, the viscosity of the blood is reduced. You will then have good flow of blood in the vessels. This would mean better delivery of nutrients to organs in the body (e.g. brain). Thus one article mentioned that if you would like to improve your memory loose blood (donate).

With the new trend in transfusion medicine, we can now separate one unit of blood into components. One unit of whole blood donation will yield packed red cells (for anemia), platelet concentrate (for dengue hemorrhagic fever and leukemia) and fresh frozen plasma to processed into cryoprecipitate for hemophiliacs ( a clotting disorder manifested in males only. Thus in one donation you can save 3 lives or about 12 lives in a year for a regular donation (every 3 months)
